Hybrid Solar Captive Power Projects in India’s Green Energy Plan

Industries in India are increasingly turning to captive solar power projects to meet their energy needs and reduce reliance on traditional energy sources. Companies in sectors like manufacturing, textiles, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals are adopting both rooftop and ground-mounted solar systems.

Captive solar power producers can generate energy on-site or near-site. Off-grid systems operate independently from the grid, storing solar power in batteries for use at night. These systems are self-sustaining but expensive to install.

On-grid systems, which are connected to the utility grid, send excess power back to the grid and compensate consumers for the extra power. These systems are suitable for high-consumption sectors and can work with or without net metering.

Some of the projects include Hindalco Industries commissioned a 25 MW captive solar power plant at its Mahan aluminium smelting unit in Madhya Pradesh in 2022 to meet organizational needs. Cipla also announced the operation of an additional 16 MW solar capacity in Maharashtra in 2021, in partnership with AMP Energy India.
